At dinners and in classrooms we casually draw a few vertical lines and connect them with rungs. Yet this familiar game carries nearly 700 years of history.
The ladder game traces back to Japan's Amidakuji (あみだくじ). Its earliest form is recorded as far back as the Muromachi period (roughly the 14th–16th centuries) — and remarkably, it didn't look like the "ladder" we know today. Instead of a grid of vertical and horizontal lines, it began as a radial fan, with lines spreading out from a single central point.
The name "Amidakuji" is said to come from Amida Buddha (阿弥陀如来). In Buddhist paintings, Amida is depicted with a halo of light radiating in every direction, and the spokes of the early game resembled exactly that. So it became the "lottery shaped like Amida's light" — Amidakuji. A single game's name carries the imagery of a religious painting.
Its early use was different, too. When a group pooled small amounts of money, each spoke of the radial pattern hid a different amount, and players picked a line to decide how much they would pay. In other words, today's "money distribution" mode is actually closest to the oldest original form. Only much later did it broaden into an all-purpose tool for deciding order, winners, and penalties.
Radial layouts get tangled and hard to follow as the group grows. Over time Amidakuji settled into the form of several vertical lines crossed by horizontal rungs. You follow a line downward, and each rung shifts you one column sideways — making the outcome easy to trace. Because it looks like climbing up and down a ladder, Korean naturally named it Sadari-taki ("climbing the ladder").
The same game earned different names in each country. Japan still calls it Amidakuji, Korea Sadari-taki, English speakers named it Ghost Leg after the leg-like vertical lines, and Chinese speakers call it Ghost's Leg Diagram (鬼腳圖). The names differ, but the principle is one — a fair lottery that gives everyone a different, non-overlapping result. A 700-year-old wisdom now living on as a browser animation.
